(2/14/2002) According to Carnival President Bob Dickinson, the record number of departure points follows the company's strategy of deploying tonnage near large U.S. population bases. "Nowadays, consumers appreciate the convenience of sailing from a port closer to home and these sailings offer U.S. residents a convenient and affordable vacation option – often departing right from their own backyards," he said. Many of the sailings from non-traditional ports are in the short cruise market (five days or less in length), mirroring Americans' increasing preference for shorter, more frequent vacations. In fact, Carnival will offer a record 31 different short cruise itineraries in 2002 with nearly half of the line's fleet deployed on short cruises in the coming year. "Short cruises are the fastest growing segment in the cruise industry, offering the flexibility and value desired by today's time-crunched consumers," Dickinson said. |
